Penny Sanderson BA, SBA (dip) in her own words:
“I started drawing and painting pretty much as soon as I could hold a pen, any surface was my canvas, including my childhood bedroom walls. Instead of following the route to art college after school, I went to university in the UK and America, worked for a charity in Borneo then in London as a full-time journalist on magazines, newspapers and broadsheets.
At the same time, I attended Central St Martin’s art college, followed by a two-year Fine Art course at The City Lit, and a Diploma with The Society of Botanical Artists. Marriage, followed by a son, spurred me and my new family to migrate back to our native Sussex and a new chapter began!
At first, I juggled between being a freelance journalist, commuting to London and my love of art, but eventually, the balance tipped. I’m now in the incredibly lucky position to be able to exhibit my own work, take on mural commissions, develop my homeware range and teach Botanical painting courses and workshops, both here and abroad.
I want people to dust off their sketchbooks, or pick up a paintbrush for the first time, and see the natural world in a different light and in all its incredible beauty. I hope that my students through the magic of painting are able, even just for a few moments, to feel the modern world disappear, as they work with this natural way of expression. For me, painting for a living has always felt like an unsustainable pipe dream, but as a lovely friend once asked, which is relevant to many things in life: ‘If not now, when?’”
